East Baltimore Orioles:
Before September 28, 1953 the Baltimore Orioles were the St. Louis
Browns. Owners agreed to move the team to Baltimore after the Browns
went 54-100 and failed to attract enough of a crowd. The St. Louis
Browns ended their season with a heartbreaking 11-inning loss to Chicago
in front of only 3,174 fans.
On April 6, 1992 Oriole Park at Camden Yards became the official home of
the Orioles. Obata & Kassabaum (from the Kansas City architectural firm
of Helmuth) designed this majestic baseball-only park. It has a natural
grass turf, an asymmetrical playing field, and a sunroof over the upper
deck. The ballpark cost $110 million dollars and took 33 months to
build.
As of 2003 the Orioles won three World Series Championships in franchise
history. Their first World Series victory was in 1966 against the L.A.
Dodgers. Second victory was in 1970 against the NL champion Cincinnati
Reds. Then in 1983 despite devastating injuries to players such as Jim
Palmer, Mike Flanagan, Dan Ford, and Tippy Martinez, the O’s defeated
Pete Rose and the Philadelphia Phillies.
