The NL Central Chicago Cubs:

The Chicago Cubs started playing ball in 1876 at State Street Grounds. They were known as the Chicago White Stockings from 1876-1889, then in 1890 they acquired the name the Chicago Colts; mainly because of the number of very young players on the team. The team name changed again from 1898-1901 to the Chicago Orphans and in 1902 they were finally known as the Chicago Cubs. All of the nicknames they’ve possessed since1890 have to do with the young ages of the players. Most true fans call the Cubs “Cubbies.”

From 1878-1884 the team played at Lakefront Park then moved to West Side Park from 1885-1891. In 1891 they moved to Brotherhood Park followed by West Side Grounds in 1893. Opening day at West Side Grounds was May 14, 1893. Seating capacity there was only 16,000. In 1914 Charlie Weeghman built Wrigley Field (originally called Weeghman Park.) This stadium cost $250,000 to build and when first opened had a seating capacity of 14,000. Through the years with loads of improvements the seating capacity grew to approximately 38,900. The surface is made up of Merion Bluegrass and clover and the outfield wall is lined with stunning ivy that was planted in 1937. In 1916 the Cubs moved into the new stadium and in 1919 Wrigley bought out Weeghman’s share of the team and changed the name of the stadium to Cubs Park. The stadium was renamed Wrigley Field in 1926 to honor their owner. Playing in the same stadium for almost 100 years now the Cubs are perfectly content and satisfied right where they are.
If you go to Wrigley Field you will see Ernie Banks’s uniform #14 and Billy Williams’s uniform #26 flying high on two of the foul poles. Wind plays a huge factor at Wrigley Field sometimes helping the pitcher and often times aiding in home runs depending on which way the wind is coming from.

On October 12, 1907 the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series game. They played against the Detroit Tigers beating them 4-0-1. In 1908 they did it again, this time playing the Detroit Tigers and earning the title once more winning 4 of 5 games.
