Central Cleveland Indians:
The Indians were first known as the Blues, then in 1902 they were known
as the Broncos and from 1903-1914. They acquired the name the Naps until
1915 when they finally became known as the Cleveland Indians.
The Indians started playing Major League Baseball in League Park from
1901-1909 with a seating capacity of only 9,000. From 1910-1932 they
relocated to League Park II with a much larger seating capacity of
21,414. They then moved to the Cleveland Municipal Stadium known as the
“mistake by the lake.” This nickname originated after the stadium was
built with the belief Cleveland would host the 1932 Olympics there. This
stadium seated 74,000 people.
In 1986 Richard Jacobs and his brother David bought the Cleveland
Indians. On April 4, 1994 the Cleveland Indians moved to the magnificent
Jacobs Field with a seating capacity of 43,386. This stadium cost
approximately $175 million to build. Seating capacity of this stadium is
much smaller than that of the Municipal Stadium however, attendance rose
dramatically after the move. Jacobs Field was location for the 1995
World Series, were the Indians earned their first division title and the
1997 All-Star game.
On October 10, 1920 the Indians won their first World Series when they
played against the Brooklyn Dodgers who were tied 2-2 with the Indians.
The Indians won this 5th game and Elmer Smith created a new record by
hitting the first grand slam in World Series history. The Indians won a
second World Series victory in 1948.
