Central Detroit Tigers: The
Detroit Tigers started their Major League Baseball career on April 25,
1901. They were scheduled to start on the 24th however they had to
postpone the first game due to weather conditions. The Tigers first
started playing ball at Bennett Park from 1901-1911. This stadium was
named in honor of Tiger catcher Charlie Bennett who had lost both legs
in a terrible train accident.
In 1912 the new stadium opened. It was re-built on the same site as
Bennett Park. The original name of the stadium was Navin Field named
after owner Frank Navin. In 1938 the name changed to Briggs Stadium
after Walter Briggs purchased the Tigers and then renamed again (Tiger
Stadium) in 1961. This stadium consists of Kentucky Bluegrass and has a
seating capacity of 46,945. This was also the home of the Detroit Lions
up until 1975 when they moved to the Silver dome. In the summer of 2000
the Tigers relocated to Comerica Park. This stadium cost 300 million
dollars to build and is known not only for its field but is also an
amusement park and museum. Seating capacity is 40,000 and features the
biggest scoreboard around! The Park also features a ferris wheel,
carousel, a water show and museum as you walk your way through Tiger
history.
The Detroit Tigers first World Series Championship was won on October 7,
1935. Playing against the Chicago Cubs, the Tigers win their forth game
out of six earning them the Championship title. On October 10, 1945, ten
years later, playing the same team (Chicago Cubs) the Tigers win four
out of seven games winning the World Series for a second time. The
Tigers won their third World Series game on October 10, 1968 playing
against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Tigers won the seventh game 4-1,
giving them four out of seven wins and once again winning the title. The
Tigers fourth victory was played out on October 14, 1984 when the team
went into the Series with the San Diego Padres. The Tigers didn’t even
give the Padres a chance as they won four out of five games!
