East Florida Marlins:
On August 8, 1985, Major League Baseball's new basic agreement permitted
the National League to expand by two teams to match the American
League's 14. Then on March 7, 1990, H. Wayne Huizenga announced his
purchase of half of Joe Robbie Stadium (later named Pro Player stadium)
and 15% of the Miami Dolphins for an estimated $30 million with
aggressive intentions to lure a baseball expansion team. Finally on
December 18th 1990, South Florida was chosen to become the new home for
the debut expansion team “The Marlins”. In 1991 Joe Robbie Stadium
(originally constructed primarily for football) was renovated to house
the Marlins. On May 11, 1996 Al Leiter and the Marlins got their first
no-hitter in club history against the rival expansion team the Colorado
Rockies. The very next year (1997), with a two-out single in the 11th
inning of game 7, the Florida Marlins proved themselves by winning the
World Series Championship. Only two years later in 1999, the Marlins
announced they chose Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami as their site
for a new baseball-only stadium. After several years Bicentennial Park
has still not been approved to become the new stadium for the Marlins,
so they continue to play in Pro Player. Generally Pro Player stadium has
a seating capacity of approximately 36,000 for baseball and is a great
place to watch a game. However, the Marlins still have desire to build a
new park with a retractable roof to cover the field when it rains.
