| The
NL Central Houston Astros:
The Houston Astros started playing Major
League Baseball in 1962. First known as the Houston Colt .45’s; they
acquired their name in 1965. Colt Stadium was their first home from
1962-1964. This stadium had a seating capacity of approximately 33,000
and cost 2 million dollars to build. In 1965 the Astros relocated to the
Astrodome. Colt Stadium was later dismantled and moved to Mexico for a
Mexican baseball team. The Astrodome cost 35 million dollars to build
and had a seating capacity of approximately 42,000 when first built and
rose to over 54,800 by 1990 (for baseball). The Astrodome was the first
enclosed stadium built. Hard to see fly balls soon became an issue so
they painted the ceiling. The surface had to be covered with Astroturf
as a result. In 1989 many renovations were made to the Astrodome costing
$60 million. Among the improvements were more seating, new scoreboards
and concrete floor (previously dirt.) The Astros last game in this
stadium was October 9, 1999.
Minute Maid Park became the Astros new home in 2000. Playing baseball
inside a dome for over three decades, it was a nice change moving to
Minute Maid Park. This stadium features a 242 ft. high retractable roof!
When the roof is closed it consists of 50,000 sq. ft. of glass. Minute
Maid Park has a seating capacity of about 42,000 and the surface is made
up of grass.
