| The
NL West Los Angeles Dodgers:
The Los Angeles Dodgers Major League Baseball debut was back in 1890.
They were known at that time as the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. They played
their first season at Washington Park. In 1891, they played at Eastern
Park and relocated again in 1898 to Washington Park II. This stadium had
a seating capacity of approximately 18,800 by the year 1914. The surface
was made up of natural grass. A section of the clubhouse wall is still
standing to this day, possibly being the oldest ballpark wall. In 1899,
the Dodgers then became known as the Brooklyn Superbas. Ebbets Field was
the Dodgers next home from 1913-1957. Known at this time, from 1911-1913
as the Brooklyn Dodgers, then from 1914-1931 as the Brooklyn Robins and
back to Brooklyn Dodgers from 1932-1957. Ebbets Field had a seating
capacity of around 25,000 in 1913 and grew to about 32,000 by 1932. Its
surface was made up of natural grass. Cost to build this stadium was
about $750,000. This stadium was location for the first televised
baseball game, Dodgers vs. Reds on August 26, 1939. The Dodgers then
played one season at the Roosevelt Stadium before relocating again in
1958, this time to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and finally became
known as the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ebbets Field was demolished in 1960.
Memorial Coliseum cost $954,873 to build in 1923; in 1958 an additional
$950,294 was spent for improvements. The seating capacity by the year
1988 had grown from the original 74,000 to approximately 92,400. Its
surface is made up of natural grass.
In 1962, the Dodgers had a brand new stadium built, Dodger Stadium.
Dodger Stadium was a privately funded park built solely for baseball. It
sits on 300 acres of land and the surface consists of Santa Ana Bermuda
grass. This stadium cost about $23 million to build. It is known to be
the cleanest ballpark in Major League Baseball. Seating capacity is
approximately 56,000. The Los Angeles Angels shared Dodgers stadium from
1962-1965. When first opened, it was known as the Chavez Ravine. In
2000, many improvements were made to Dodger Stadium. More seats were
added and suites were built and in 2003 they added a new scoreboard and
a video board. In 2003, Dodger Stadium was voted the best baseball
stadium in a poll taken by Sports Illustrated.
The Dodgers have won the World Series a total of six times to date (not
to mention 21 League Champions, 9 Division Champions and one Wild Card.)
Their first World Series victory occurred on October 4, 1955. Playing
the New York Yankees, the Dodgers won 4-3. In 1959, the Dodgers vs. the
White Sox, Dodgers prevail 4-2. In 1963, the Dodgers face the New York
Yankees another time; the Dodgers win the World Series 4-0, steeling the
title all over again. In 1981, the Dodgers steel the title from the
Yankees a third time, winning the World Series 4-2. In 1988, the Dodgers
win once more, playing against the Oakland Athletics, the Dodgers win
the World Series 4-1.
