The Milwaukee Brewers started playing Major
League Baseball in 1969. The Brewers started out as an American League
and became a National League in 1998. The first year they were known as
the Seattle Pilots. In that year the Brewers home was Sick’s Stadium
with a seating capacity of approximately 59,000. In 1970 when they first
became known as the Milwaukee Brewers they relocated to County Stadium.
This stadium started out with a seating capacity of approximately 36,000
and rose to 53,000 by 1975. Its surface is made up of Kentucky
Bluegrass. County Stadium was built in 1953 and cost $5 million to
build. Three decades of playing baseball in a stadium that was built in
the 50’s, and the Brewers were more than ready for there next move to
Miller Park. The Brewers were expected to make the move in 2000; however
there was a terrible accident during the construction phase where three
workers were killed by a crane. This delayed opening day to April 6,
2001. Miller Park has a seating capacity of approximately 43,000 and the
surface is made up of grass. The cost to build this stadium was $400
million dollars. The stadium has a retractable roof that cost $50
million alone. The roof is fan shaped, weighs about 12,000 ton and can
close in a matter of 10 minutes.
