Central Minnesota Twins:
The Minnesota Twins originated in 1901.
First known as the Washington Senators from 1901-1960, the Twins started
playing Major League Baseball in a small park called American League
Park. This was really just a ball park with wooden bleachers so in 1903
they moved to Griffith Stadium with a much larger seating capacity of
27,550. Griffith stadium was mostly built out of wood and tragically
burned down during spring training in 1911. The stadium was then
reconstructed using concrete and steel and finished mid-season that same
year. The stadium had to be built around five houses and an enormous
tree. Traditionally every season the United States president would throw
out the first ball. The presidents had their own box to watch the game
in close proximity to the first base dugout. The Twins played their last
game at Griffith Stadium on September 21, 1961 and in 1965 the stadium
was demolished.
The Twins then relocated to Metropolitan Stadium, played there from
1961-1981. The original cost of this stadium was 8 ½ million dollars. In
1961 the seating capacity was 30,637 and rose to 45,919 by 1975 due to
improvements made to the stadium. The only problem was each section was
a different height; one deck, two decks, three decks, in which made the
wind factor an aid for many homeruns!
In1982 the Minnesota Twins moved once again, this time to the Hubert H.
Humphrey Metrodome. The Metrodome is also the home of the Minnesota
Vikings (NFL). The surface was originally covered with SporTurf up until
1987 when they changed it to Astroturf. Seating capacity for baseball is
approximately 55,883 and has an inner volume of 60 million cubic feet!
It was constructed by Barton Marlow and cost $68 million dollars to
build. This Metrodome is currently the only air-supported playing field
in Major League Baseball. 250,000 cubic feet of air pressure per minute
is mandatory to keep the domes roof inflated and gave way a few times
due to a large extent of snow a top in which the game had to be
postponed. The roofs Teflon fabric also makes it tough to see the ball
if hit high enough and once Oakland A’s Dave Kingman even hit a ball
right through the roof! The Metrodome was location for two World Series
games, an All-Star game in 1985, Super Bowl XXXVI, and two NCAA
basketball tournaments.
The Twins first World Series championship happened in 1924. Back then
they were still known as the Washington Senators. They were up against
the New York Giants who were back in the finals for the eighth time in
fourteen years. Although they were up against some pretty tough
competition, the Senators won the seventh game 4-3 wining 4 out of seven
games and giving them the World Series title. They made it to the World
Series again the following year up against the Pittsburgh Pirates this
time, only lost 4 of 7 games but winning the Pennant for that year. The
Twins next World Series victory happened on October, 25, 1987 up against
the St. Louis Cardinals. They won there 7th game 4-2 giving them 4 out
of 7 wins once again and earning their second title. On October 27, 1991
the Twins won the World Series for a third time. This time playing the
Atlanta Braves and winning the 7th game 1-0 giving them 4-3 wins and
once more the title.
