The NL East New York Mets:

In 1959 a New York attorney named William Shea created a plan for the unveiling of the latest New York team. In an attempt to fill the void of the loss of the NY Giants and Dodgers, William Shea initially tried to relocate the Cincinnati Reds, the Pittsburgh Pirates, or the Philadelphia Phillies to New York; unfortunately, there was no interest. Then he planned to form his own league (the Continental League), but that ended before it began. Until finally in 1960, the National league expanded the teams and included New York in that expansion, if they could build the new baseball team a modern stadium. Shea agreed to build the new stadium, however he needed time to construct the new facility. Finally, in 1961 the National League accepted the Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc (nickname the Mets) into Major League Baseball. They started playing one year later. The circular Mets logo was designed by sports cartoonist Ray Gatto and was unveiled on November 16, 1961. It has virtually gone unchanged throughout the history of the New York ball club.

The Mets began their inaugural season playing at the Polo Grounds--the former home of the New York Giants--while their new stadium was under construction. Shea Stadium cost $28.5 million and took 29 months to build. It was initially going to be called Flushing Meadow Park, but the people of the Brooklyn-Queens area were so excited (especially after being abandoned by 2 MLB teams previously) that they gave the ballpark the honorary name of Shea stadium. It was the first baseball to football convertible stadium, using two motor-operated stands that moved on underground tracks. It is also the noisiest outdoor ballpark in Major League Baseball due to the fact that it is located in the flight path of La Guardia Airport. The rumor is, that when the city scouted sites for the new ballpark in 1962, they went during the winter, when flight paths into La Guardia were rerouted, so they never predicted the future aircraft noise. Shea stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 56,000 but has the capability of being expanded to 90,000. It has a playing surface of Kentucky blue grass, which gives the field a classic look. The right-center scoreboard is one of largest in the majors. It is 175 feet long and 86 feet high with a Bulova clock on top that is about 25 feet behind the outfield fence. It is one of the most amazing ballparks in the world and one thing that may be louder than the planes overhead is 56,000 screaming fans in the stands.
