East New York Yankees:
The Yankees were originally called the New York Highlanders. The
Highlanders were formed in 1903 when the Baltimore Orioles franchise of
the American League was acquired and moved to New York. The team
initially played in the all-wood Hilltop Park; then in 1913 the team
relocated to Polo Grounds where the NY Giants were already playing. At
that juncture the team was renamed the New York Yankees. In 1920, the
Yankees had so many more fans attending games than the Giants that they
were asked to leave Polo Grounds and play somewhere else. On April 18,
1923, Yankee Stadium was developed and the Yankees had their permanent
home.
The Yankees have had so much success as a franchise it’s difficult to
know where to begin. As of 2003 the New York Yankees have won 26 World
Series Championships, 13 Division Titles, 39 League Championships, and
have had countless unforgettable hall of fame ball players.
The Yankees have produced more hall of fame players than any other team
in franchise history. The list is so long it would take half my article,
so I’ll name only a few: Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, Joe
Dimaggio, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto, Babe Ruth, Dave
Winfield, and so many more.
Only one year after the Yankees bought Babe Ruth from the Red Sox, the
Yankees broadcasted their plan of building a new stadium in the West
Bronx. About ten months later Yankee Stadium was ready for opening day
April 18, 1923 where the Yanks would face the Red Sox. New Yorkers
realized the stadium would have never been built had it not been for
Babe Ruth’s awesome drawing power and called the Stadium "The House That
Ruth Built." Over 74,000 fans attended on opening day to get a peek at
the new stadium.
