| The
NL Central Pittsburgh Pirates:
The Pittsburgh Pirates were also known as
the Pittsburgh Alleghenys from 1887-1890 at which time they began their
Major League Baseball career. Recreation Park was the Pirates first home
from 1887-1890. In 1891, the league relocated to Exposition Park. This
stadium was very small which lead the team to move again in 1909 to
Forbes Field. This soon became the Pirates home for over 60 years. This
stadium’s seating capacity in 1909 was approximately 25,000 rising to
roughly 35,000 by 1938. Its surface was made up of grass. Many terrific
moments and victories were fashioned at Forbes Field. This was where
Babe Ruth hit the final homerun of his Major League Baseball career,
belting the ball nearly 300 ft. This event occurred on May 25, 1935.
In 1970, the Pirates then relocated to the Three Rivers Stadium. This
was also the home of the Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL). The Stadium had a
seating capacity of about 47,900 (for baseball) and cost roughly $40
million to build. The surface was made up of Tartan turf; replaced by
Astroturf in 1983. This stadium was built on the same grounds were
Exposition Park once stood. They transported the Honus Wagner statue
from Forbes Field and in 1994 the Roberto Clemente statue was dedicated
at the Three Rivers Stadium.
On April 8, 1999, construction set in motion for the Pirates latest
ballpark, PNC Park. The PNC Park opened in the year 2001. The surface is
made up of natural grass. The stadium can seat around 38,000 (baseball)
fans. Cost to build this stadium was about $262 million. PNC Park was
aiming to appear like a classic ballpark. It was designed with older
ballparks in mind like Forbes Field, Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. It
has all the makings of the old ballparks but also has many of the latest
features and attractions. On the roof you’ll find a 500 person party
deck and Brew Pub in which you will experience an outstanding view of
the field and the stunning city of Pittsburgh.
On October 16, 1909, the Pittsburgh Pirates won their number one World
Series title. They were playing against the Detroit Tigers and defeated
them 4-3. In 1925 they did it a second time, playing the Washington
Senators this time, winning the World Series 4-3. The third time the
Pirates acquire the World Series title was in 1960. Playing against the
New York Yankees, the Pirates triumphed once more, 4-3. Their fourth
World Series success happened in 1971 when the Pirates were up against
the Baltimore Orioles, yet again winning 4-3. A fifth victory of the
World Series occurred in 1979. Competing against the Baltimore Orioles,
the Pirates meet another 4-3 victory.
