| The
NL West San Diego Padres:
The San Diego Padres started playing Major League Baseball in 1969
(expansion team). The Padres share their first home (Qualcomm Stadium)
with the San Diego Chargers (NFL). This stadium had a seating capacity
in 1967 of approximately 50,000 which grew to about 67,500 by the year
1997. Its surface is made up of Santa Ana Bermuda grass. It cost the
City of San Diego 27.75 million dollars to build. This stadium was also
known as the San Diego Stadium, the Jack Murphy Field and the Q. This
was the Padres home for over 30 years. In 2004, the Padres are
relocating to the fabulous new ballpark, PETCO Park.
PETCO Park is a new construction ballpark. It sits on 18 acres of land
and will start out with a seating capacity of approximately 46,000. It
is constructed of stone, stucco, brick and steel. The total cost to
build the stadium will be in the neighborhood of $449.4 million. The
surface is made up of natural grass. The Park features gorgeous Suites;
the Founders Club Suites and the Terrace Club Level. You could watch the
game very comfortably from here. The new park also features a beach to
the right of home plate. You could even watch the Padres play from the
lovely Picnic area. This area is rightfully named the “Park in the
Park.” Sitting in the stadium seats will even be a great experience as
they have designed the seats wider and at an angle so fans will have the
best view. The park also features an entertainment zone for kids.
