| The
NL West San Francisco Giants:
The San Francisco Giants made their Major League Baseball debut in 1883.
First known as the New York Giants, in 1957 they moved to San Francisco
and became known then as the San Francisco Giants.
The Giants first ball park was Polo Grounds in New York, NY. The Giants
played here from 1883-1888. From 1889-1890, they played at the Manhattan
Field. In 1891, it became known as Polo Grounds II. This stadium had a
seating capacity when first built of approximately 34,000 and grew to
about 55,000 by 1923. The 5 ft. tall Eddie Grant Memorial was dedicated
on May 30, 1921 in this park. Eddie was a former Giants player who was
killed in WWI.
In 1958, the Giants relocated to San Francisco. The Giants played their
first two seasons at Seals Stadium, with a seating capacity of about
22,900. In 1960, the Giants moved again, this time to 3Com Park now
known as Candlestick Park. 3Com Park had a seating capacity of
approximately 43,700 in 1960 and grew to about 58,000 by 1993. The
surface is made up of Kentucky Blue grass. This stadium cost about $15
million to build. The Giants shared this stadium with the San Francisco
49ers (NFL). Candlestick Park hosted six World Series games. In 2000, a
brand new stadium was built for the Giants. SBC Park (also known as
Pacific Bell Park) cost $255 million dollars to build. It has a seating
capacity of approximately 41,000. The Surface is made up of Sports Turf.
The park features 63 luxury suites and 5,200 club seats. The seats are
angled so where ever you are sitting in the park, you will still have a
great view of the playing field.
The Giants have won the World Series five times to date. Their first win
happened on October 14, 1905. Playing against the Athletics, the Giants
win the title 4-1. Next, in 1921, the Giants face the Yankees, winning
the World Series title 5-3. The very next year it’s the Giants vs.
Yankees again, the Giants steel the title once more winning the World
Series 4-0-1. In 1933, the Giants go up against the Senators, winning
the World Series 4-1. In 1954, Giants vs. Indians, Giants prevail once
more, winning the World Series 4-0.
