| The
NL Central St. Louis Cardinals:
The St. Louis Cardinals began playing Major League Baseball in 1893.
First known as the St. Louis Browns in 1892 and then the St. Louis
Perfectos in 1899, the team acquired the name St. Louis Cardinals in
1900. The Cardinals first ballpark was Robison Field. This stadium had a
seating capacity of approximately 14,500 when first opened and grew to
about 21,000 by 1909. Its surface was made up of natural grass.
In 1920, the Cardinals relocated to Sportsman’s Park. This stadium
seating capacity was around 30,500 by the year 1953 following many
improvements. Cost of renovations was about $500,000. In 1953 the
stadium was renamed Busch Stadium. This happened after Gussie Bush
bought the Cardinals. There was a huge Bush eagle on top of the
scoreboard and every time the Cardinals would make a homerun, its wings
would flap. The Cardinals played in this stadium for 44 years.
In 1966 the stadium was demolished and a helicopter flew home plate from
Sportsman’s Park over to the Cardinals new home, Busch Memorial Stadium.
This stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 49,600 (for
baseball). The surface is made up of natural grass, except during a
period from 1970-1995 when they tried using artificial turf. This new
stadium was built in mind to draw bigger crowds of fans to Cardinals
games. It also aided in the booming of business in that downtown area.
After the stadium was built, many shopping plazas, restaurants, office
buildings and complexes had erected. The new stadium was not only good
for the Cardinals but good for the city as well. The field is surrounded
by 96 arches and if you are sitting on the top deck in right field, you
can see the St. Louis Arche. This was location for 5 World Series games
two of which the Cardinals won.
The Cardinals won the World Series a total of nine times to date not to
mention 15 League Champions, 6 Division Champions and 1 Wild-Card. The
Cardinals first World Series victory was in 1926. Up against the New
York Yankees, the cardinals won 4-3. In 1931, playing against the
Philadelphia Athletics, the Cardinals triumph a second time winning 4-3.
The third World Series concur happened in the 1934 World Series where
the Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3. Forth time, 1942, playing
against the New York Yankees, Cardinals win 4-1. Fifth time, 1944,
playing St. Louis Browns, Cardinals win yet again, 4-2. The Cardinals
win the World Series again two years later in 1946. Playing the Boston
Red Sox, the Cardinals won 4-3.
In 1964, the Cardinals stole the title from the Yankees once more by
winning the World Series 4-3. In 1967, it’s the Cardinals up against the
Boston Red Sox once more. The Cardinals take home the World Series title
undefeated, 4-3. The ninth win was in 1982 when the Cardinals played the
Milwaukee Brewers and won 4-3.
