West Texas Rangers:
The Texas Rangers were formed in 1961. First
known as the Washington Senators, the teams first home was Griffith
Stadium in Washington, D.C. This stadium had a seating capacity of
approximately 27,500. The stadium was primarily built in 1891 then later
rebuilt in 1911. The stadium’s name had changed several times before the
Rangers (Senators) moved in. The stadium had to be built around five
houses and an enormous tree. Traditionally every season the United
States president would throw out the first ball. The presidents had
their own box to watch the game in close proximity to the first base
dugout. From 1962-1971 the Rangers played at the Robert F. Kennedy
Stadium. This circular stadium has a seating capacity of approximately
45,000. The Rangers played here up until 1972 when the team then moved
to Texas and became the Texas Rangers.
In Texas, the Rangers first home was Arlington Stadium. Original cost to
build this stadium (in 1965) was about $1.9 million, later $19 million
more was spent for renovations. When the Rangers moved in it had a
seating capacity of about 35,000, rising to about 43,000 by the year
1992. The surface was made up of Bermuda grass. Temperatures during the
day often reached 100 degrees; therefore most games were played at night
when it is a little cooler outside. In 1994, the Rangers moved into a
new stadium constructed across the street, The Ballpark in Arlington.
The old stadium was then demolished. The Ballpark in Arlington has a
seating capacity of approximately 52,000. Taking nearly 2 years to
erect, cost to build this stadium was roughly $191 million. This modern
facility features the Rangers Walk of Fame, a baseball museum, raised
bullpens, a picnic area and 5 levels of seating to choose from.
