| The AL
East Toronto Blue Jays:
In the early 1970’s Toronto was trying to attract a Major League
Baseball team to their city. The first attempt was to grab the Giants
before they moved to San Francisco-- which didn’t work out. Finally in
1976 the city was granted a Major League franchise; however, the team
didn’t begin playing until the following year. Imperial Trust, Ltd.,
Labatts Breweries, and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce paid the
franchise fee of seven million dollars. The fans themselves in a “Name
the Team” contest developed the team’s name. Over 4,000 names and 30,000
entries were submitted before they finally settled on the name Blue
Jays. The team had great success and went on to win two World Series
championships and four Divisional Championships.
Originally in 1977 the Toronto Blue Jays played in Exhibition Stadium,
which was primarily a football stadium but redesigned to accommodate
baseball. The plan for a new stadium was conceived in 1923 (long before
Toronto had a baseball team); however, there was a 63-year lull before
the stadium was finally built. The Sky Dome opened in 1989 and was the
first stadium in any sport that developed an indoor-outdoor retractable
roof. The dome accommodates baseball, football, and many other events
and was named by the fans themselves. Approximately 13,000 fans
submitted suggestions for the name of the new dome and finally on May
11, 1987 the new facility was named the Sky Dome. On opening day over
60,000 fans watched the dome open its retractable roof publicly for the
first time. The roof weighs over 20 million pounds and is made up of
four independent panels that take 20 minutes to fold over each other,
unveiling the sky. Attached to the Sky Dome is the Sky Dome Hotel. It
has 350 rooms, 70 that overlook the playing field. Beyond centerfield is
the Hard Rock Café, which also overlooks the playing field. Also in
centerfield is a 110 ft. wide by 33 ft. high Jumbo TRON video board. The
Sky Dome stadium is the world's most advanced and luxurious ballpark
with a seating capacity of more than 60,000.
