Arizona Cardinals:
The Arizona Cardinals are the oldest team that has continuously been a
part of professional football. They started out playing for the Morgan
Athletic club that was founded by Chris O’Brien in 1898. At the time
they were playing at 61st and Racine street in the Chicago area and when
O’Brien picked up uniforms that he described as being “Cardinal Red” the
team was nicknamed the Racine Street Cardinals. In the 1920’s the
Cardinals began playing with the American Professional Football
Association where they instantly ran into problems over which team had
the rights to playing in the Chicago area. The Cardinals challenged the
Tigers to a game for the rights to play in the city. They won that game
and the Tigers were forced
to leave the town and settle elsewhere. Aside from a few highlights, the
Cardinals had a dismal showing in their first 26 seasons. In 1929 during
a Thanksgiving Day game, the team’s running back, Ernie Nevers, made a
record that still stands today when he scored all of the 40 points that
won the Cardinals the game. They won the NFL Championship in 1947 and
the Western Conference title in 1948. The Cardinals then went into a
slump and didn’t see the playoffs until 1998. The Cardinals spent 40
years playing in Chicago. In 1960 they moved to St. Louis where they
stayed until 1988 when Owner William Bidwill moved the team for a second
time. The second move found the Cardinals in Phoenix. In 1994 the
Cardinals changed their name to the Arizona Cardinals.
Sun Devil stadium, where the Cardinals call home, was built for Arizona
State University’s team, the Sun Devils. The
Cardinals are the only NFL team that play full time in the stadium. They
moved to the stadium after the 1987 season when the left St. Louis to
come to Arizona. Sun Devil stadium boasts a main grandstand shaped like
a horse shoe, video scoreboards behind the southern end zone and a
seating capacity of 73,234. Sun Devil stadium has a natural grass
playing surface and allows the fans an amazing view of the horizon.
