Carolina Panthers:
Former Baltimore Colts wide receiver Jerry Richardson celebrated with
the city of Charlotte on October 26th, 1993 when it was announced that
the Carolina Panthers would be the expansion franchise. July 16th, 1987
marked the day that the journey began. Richardson began talk of entering
the race for one of the two expansion franchises and officially
announced that the Carolina’s would be entering on December 15th, 1987.
First on the priority list was locating a suitable location for a
stadium. After considering many prospects it was decided that a location
in uptown Charlotte would be where the stadium would be constructed.
On March 18th, 1992 the list of candidates for an expansion were cut
back from eleven to seven with the Carolina’s still in the running. On
May 20th of the same year more cuts were made, dropping it to five
cities. And on October 26th, 1993 the Panthers officially became the
NFL’s 29th franchise. The Panthers had an impressive first season
setting a new record for the most wins by an expansion team with a 7-9
record. Their second season was even more impressive when they posted a
12-4 record, winning the NFC Western Division title and moving on to
compete in the NFC Championship game. In 2003 the Panthers earned a trip
to Super Bowl XXXVIII.
The Bank of America stadium located just outside downtown Charlotte is
the home of the Panthers. Complete with archways and domed towers, Bank
of America stadium is one of the more unique facilities. Fans are
greeted by two 8 foot tall 2,000 pound Panthers perched atop ten foot
pedestals at each of the three entrances. Three tiers of seating
encircle the playing field with over 73,000 seats. There are two large
scoreboards beyond each end zone above the upper deck of seating. The
stadium has a natural grass surface that has a drainage system that
allows the field to drain instantly, guaranteeing play on the
field.
