Cincinnati Bengals: On March 24th,
1967 Paul Brown was granted a pro football franchise in the AFL. Brown
who had successfully coached the Cleveland Browns for 17 seasons wanted
to be back into pro football action. Brown named his team after another
pro football franchise that had played in Cincinnati in the 1030’s and
1940’s. Brows held the head coaching reigns for the Bengals first eight
seasons. He then retired from coaching but stayed on as the teams
general manager. After his death in 1991, his son Mike Brown took over
as general manager. 1968 showed the Bengals win their first two home
games and come with an 3-11 overall record. In 1969 the team improved
so much that Brown was honored with the Coach of the Year award. The
Bengals became the first expansion franchise to ever win a title in just
three short seasons, picking up the AFC Central Division title in 1970.
Selecting Ken Anderson as their quarterback in the draft in 1971 was a
key decision for the Bengals. Anderson headed up the Bengals offense
for 16 seasons and was named individual passing champion four times.
The Bengals earned the AFC Central title in 1973 and were in the playoff
in 1975 before hitting a post season slump that lasted five seasons. In
1988 under quarterback Boomer Esiason and head coach Sam Wyche the
Bengals made it all the way to Super Bowl XXIII.
