Dallas Cowboys:
Clint Murchison Jr. was granted an NFL franchise on January 28th, 1960.
Soon after he was granted the Cowboys franchise Murchison hired Tom
Landry as head coach, Gil Brandt as player and personnel director and
Tex Schramm as general manager. It seemed the Cowboys were going to be a
force to be reckoned with but success didn’t come quickly or easily. It
wasn’t until 1966 that the Cowboys hard work paid off and they enjoyed a
record setting winning streak of 20 consecutive winning seasons that
were filled with 18 playoff seasons, 13 Division Championships, 5 Super
Bowl attendances and 2 Super Bowl wins. With their Super Bowl wins they
silenced the rumors that they were a “Good team that couldn’t win the
big game”. In the 1970’s and 1980’s the Cowboys acquired the nickname
“America’s Team” as they were always a step ahead of the other
franchises with image enhancing. They accomplished this with things like
the Dallas Cowboys Newsweekly which circulated 100,000 copies and the
famous Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. In 1984 Clint Murchison sold the
franchise to H.R. Bright who sold it to Jerry Jones in 1989. Landry
retired after 270 victories and Bright brought in Jimmie Johnson. After
a an unsteady start, Johnson made some risky trades and draft selections
that brought the Cowboys back into Championship range. They remained a
dominant force throughout the early and mid 90’s even with a few
coaching changes. Johnson was replaced with Barry Switzer in 1994 who
was replaced with Chan Gailey in 1998. Two years later Gailey was
replaced when Dave Campo stepped in as head coach. Currently Bill
Parcells holds the reigns as the 6th head coach in Cowboys history.
Irving Texas is where the Cowboys call home. Texas Stadium was the idea
of Clint Murchison Jr, who announced his plans in 1967. The Stadium was
realized in 1971 when it officially opened and became home field for the
Dallas Cowboys. It has a seating capacity of 65,024.
