Detroit Lions:
The Detroit Lions were purchased by George A. Richards in 1934 after 3
attempts at bringing a professional football team to the Detroit area
failed in the 1920’s. At the time the Lion’s were named the Portsmouth
Ohio Spartans. The Spartans had been a part of the NFL since 1930 and
took part in one of the most historical moments of the game when they
played the Chicago Bears at Chicago Stadium. From that game came the
division of the league into two separate divisions and brought about an
annual showdown for the NFL title. In 1935 they won the NFL championship
and firmly established Detroits pro football franchise. In 1934 they set
a long lasting tradition of scheduling a game on Thanksgiving Day. It’s
a tradition the Lion’s have continued to this day, only having missed 6
Thanksgiving day games between the years of 1939 to 1944. Except for an
NFC Central Division title in 1983 the Lions have experienced a
championship drought since 1957.
In 1938 the Detroit Tigers moved to Briggs Field from the University of
Detroit Stadium. They stayed at Briggs Field for 37 years until 1975
when they moved to the Pontiac Silverdome. The Lions stayed at the
Silverdome for another 37 years and then relocated again to Ford Field
in downtown Detroit in 2002. It was announced in August of 1996 that the
Lions had plans for a new stadium in downtown Detroit. The field was
officially named Ford Field during the groundbreaking ceremony in
November 1999. Ford Field has a seating capacity of 65,000 and is
equipped with two 97 ft. by 27 ft. LED digital video scoreboards. There
is a banquet room overlooking the playing field and has a panoramic view
of the Detroit skyline. Ford Field also boasts a 7 story glass atrium.
Ford Field is host to many events including sporting events, banquets,
concerts, corporate meetings, tradeshows and other special events.
