Green Bay Packers:
The Green Bay Packers hold the title of the third oldest team in the pro
football league. It was in August of 1919 that a sponser for the team
was found, the Indian Packing Company. In 1921 they were accepted into
the NFL. The Packers are associated with two of the biggest names in pro
football history, Earl Lambeau and Vince Lombardi. Both coaches
collectively brought the Packers 11 NFL Championships. Twice the Packers
earned the championship for 3 years in a row. The first run was from
1929 to 1931 and the second was from 1965 to 1967. The Packers
solidified themselves as a dynasty in the 1960’s taking the NFL
championship in 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, and 1967. The team also boasts
20 Pro Football Hall of Famers including Don Hutson, John (Blood)
McNally, Jim Taylor, Willie Davis, Paul Hornung and many others.
The Packers home town is unique in its own way as well, considered a
sports dinosaur by many, Green Bay is the only small town to still be
hosting a professional sports franchise. On top of that the Packers are
community owned and a non-profit organization. They are the only team in
the NFL that have that status.
Originally the Packers played in some small fields within Green Bay but
in 1925 moved to City Stadium which had a 6,000 seat capacity. Over time
that capacity level was raised to 25,000. in 1957 a one million dollar
stadium was erected in Green Bay that was officially named Lambeau Field
a few years later in 1965. Currently Lambeau Field has a 72,515 seating
capacity. The field itself is made up of 100% Kentucky Blue Grass has a
soil warming system to keep the field at an average of 70 degrees during
the winter months.
