Miami Dolphins:
The Miami Dolphins, founded by Joseph Robbie, became the AFL’s first
expansion team and ninth overall franchise in 1967. In 1972 the Dolphins
became the only team in history have a perfect season as they won the
AFC Eastern Division, the AFC Championship and then went on to beat the
Washington Redskins at Super Bowl VII for a 17-0-0 record. It wasn’t
success right from the start for the franchise. While their first game
ever was highlighted with a 95 yard kick return for the Dolphins, their
opponents the Oakland Raiders were able to come back for the win. The
end of that first season found the Dolphins with a 4-10 overall record.
The Dolphins first coach George Wilson, who lasted only 4 seasons, left
with a 15-39-2 record in 1969. New coach Don Shula came in and took over
in 1970 and rallied the Dolphins to a AFC wild card playoff spot. He
followed that season up with 3 years of AFC championships and two Super
Bowl victories. Shula further placed the Dolphins in the record books by
surpassing George Halas’ record of 324 coaching victories in 1993.
Another shining star for the Miami Dolphins was quarterback legend Dan
Marino. During the 1984 season he gave the Dolphins another all time
record by throwing 48 touchdown passes. An era came to an end on January
7th, 1990 with the death of Joseph Robbie. In 1994 a well known
sportsman, Wayne Huizenga became the new owner of the Dolphins. A year
later in 1995 Don Shula retired as head coach.
Pro Player Stadium is where the Miami Dolphins call home. It was the
first stadium of it’s kind funded entirely from private funds. The $115
million Pro Player Stadium was unveiled on August 16th, 1987. It has a
seating capacity of 75,000 and was the site for Super Bowl XXIII. Pro
Player Stadium is a state of the art open air facility that was
originally called Dolphins Stadium.
