Minnesota Vikings:
Pro football came to Minnesota in August of 1959 when five business men,
Bill Boyer, Ole Haugsrud, Bernie Ridder, H. P. Skoglund and Max Winter
were granted a franchise for the American League, which was a new
division. However in 1961 the Viking’s left the American Football League
and were named the 14th franchise in the National Football League. The
teams first manager Bert Rose was the one who suggested the moniker
“Vikings”. The nickname was chosen based partially on it’s aggressive
representation and partially because of the Nordic tradition in that
area. In one of the greatest debut games in NFL history the Vikings
charged through the Chicago Bears beating them 37-13. After acquiring
head coach Bud Grant from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the Vikings enjoyed
a winning streak by taking 11 division titles in 13 years. Bud Grant was
one of many Vikings to make it into the Pro football Hall of Fame.
In 1982 the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome became the home of the
Minnesota Vikings. The Metrodome seats 64, 121 and cost around $55
million to build. The roof of the structure is crafted out of
Teflon-coated fiberglass and uses 20 electric fans to keep it holding
it’s billowing shape.
