New Orleans Saints:
November 1st, 1966 was not only All Saints Day it was also the day that
the NFL granted it’s 16th franchise to the city New Orleans. So it came
to no surprise when on January 9th, 1967 the team was named the Saints.
The Saints charged through their first pre-season taking victories in 5
out of 6 games. With confidence high the Saints went into their season
opener against the Los Angeles Rams with nearly 81,000 fans looking on.
The Saints took the lead early with a 94 yard kickoff return for a
touchdown in the first few minutes of the game. The Rams took the
victory in the game but the Saints had put on an impressive game. The
Saints became known for their extravagant home games that included jazz
bands, cheerleaders, marching routines by high school and college bands
and more. Even though the Saints had trouble bringing in a winning
record for their first 21 seasons, they never seemed to stop thrilling
their fans with some exciting victories and big plays. Probably one of
the more memorable plays for the Saints was in 1970 when Tom Dempsey
kicked a record setting 63 yard field goal in the last play of the game
to give the Saints the victory. The Saints started to have more success
starting with the 1987 season when they won 12 out of 15 games and
finished second in the NFC Western division. Between 1987 and 1992 they
made it to the playoffs four times and finally brought home the NFC
Western title.
The Louisiana Superdome is one of the biggest stadiums in the NFL
spanning over 13 acres and rising 27 stories. Three tiers of seating
encircle the field with a seating capacity of 70,000. In 1996 the
Superdome went through $22.8 million in upgrades including a new lobby
entrance, revamped ballrooms and an additional concourse for the upper
level seating. The Astroturf surface was replaced in 2002 with Fieldturf.
