New York Giants:
In 1925 Tim Mara knew that New York needed a Pro football franchise. For
$500 he purchased a team and invested another $25,000 in its first
season. New Yorkers showed their enthusiasm for the new team in December
of the Giants first season when over 70,000 fans came out to the Polo
Grounds to see the Giants play the Chicago Bears. The Giants were
rivaled in 1926 when Red Grange and his agent formed the American
Football League and placed another team, the Yankees, in New York to do
battle with the Giants. The Giants and the NFL prevailed and AFL
disbanded a year later. In 1927 the Giants earned their first title, the
NFL Championship with an impressive 11-1-1 record for the season. The
franchise enjoyed some of best season’s under the direction of Steve
Owen who held the reigns as head coach for 23 seasons.
The Giants have had possibly the most difficult road to finding a
permanent Stadium to call home. They started out sharing the Polo
Grounds with Major League Baseball’s Giants. In 1956 they moved to the
larger Yankee Stadium where they stayed until 1973. During the off
season leading up to the 1973 season the search for a new stadium was
on. When the schedules for the 1973 season came out the locations of the
games were not listed because it was uncertain where any of them would
in fact take place. After some negotiation it was agreed that the Giants
would play their first two games of the 1973 season at Yankee Stadium
and the remaining portion of the season and the 1974 season at the Yale
Bowl in New Haven Connecticut. In 1974 the announcement was made that
the Giants would be returning to New York City to play at Shea Stadium,
the home of baseball’s New York Mets, to play until Giants Stadium
opened in 1976. Finally in October of 1976 the Giants entered their home
stadium to a sell out crowd.
