Oakland Raiders:
The Raiders became the 8th team in the AFL in 1960, replacing the
Minneapolis franchise that backed out to join the NFL. Oakland got off
to a rocky start, there first 3 seasons were dismal with a 9-33-0
record. In part this was due to Oakland not having a facility to house
the Raiders forcing the Raiders to play in San Francisco at Kezar
Stadium and a temporary stadium set up in Oakland. Needing a dramatic
change, the Raiders hired Al Davis, San Diego’s assistant coach, as
their new head coach and the outcome was explosive. The Raiders improved
to a 10-4 season in 1963 and Davis was named coach of the year. After
the AFL and the NFL merged Davis took it upon himself to transform the
Raiders into a winning team. They posted winning records 19 of the
following 20 years and earned a dozen different titles. The Raiders also
picked up 3 Super Bowl wins and became the only team to participate in
the Super Bowl for three decades, the 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s. From
1963 to 1992 the Raiders hold a record that is best out of all major
sports teams at 285-146-11. The Raiders also hold the record for most
victories in Monday Night Football with 30 victories and one tie out of
41 appearances. The Raiders moved from Oakland to Los Angeles in 1982
where they stayed for 12 seasons and then returned to their home
Oakland, where they remain today.
The Raiders currently play at the Networks Associates Coliseum. In 1995
the Coliseum went through a $120 million renovation adding 22,000 seats,
90 luxury suites, 2 private clubs and 2 state of the art scoreboards.
Network Associates Coliseum sits on 132 acres and is quite a landmark
for the bay area. The Coliseum seats 63,024 and has a natural grass
surface.
