Philadelphia Eagles:
In 1933 Bert Bell and Lud Wray bought the Frankford Yellowjackets for
$2500 and renamed them the Eagles to honor the New Deals National
Recovery Act. It was the Eagles general manager Bert Bell who originally
came up with the idea of holding an annual college draft to acquire new
talent in 1935. Bell’s proposal was put into motion for the 1936 season.
In 1939 the Eagles participated in the first ever televised pro football
game. The game was held at the Ebbett’s Field in Brooklyn, home to the
Brooklyn Dodgers. The game is broadcast on NBC to approximately 1,000 TV
sets in Brooklyn. In 1940 the Pittsburgh franchise owner Art Rooney sold
his Steelers franchise to Alexis Thompson and he then bought half into
the Eagles. A year later Rooney and Bell swapped franchises again with
Thompson. A few years later in 1943 the two franchises, Steelers and
Eagles, were forced to combine because of a manpower shortage due to
World War II. The team, now knows as the “Steagles” disbanded to their
own franchises at the end of that season. 1949 Thompson sells her Eagles
franchise to 100 different buyers who were collectively called the
“Happy Hundred”. By the time 1958 rolled around the Eagles string of
division success came to an end as a slew of injury’s caused the team to
slip to last place in their division. This led the Eagles into their
rebuilding era with new coach Buck Shaw. It took only 3 years for Shaw
to deliver a championship win for the Eagles. In 1963 they Fell just
short of another conference championship and then went into an 18 year
play off slump. They returned to the playoffs in 1978 in their 3rd
season with coach Dick Vermeil. In 1985 the head coach reigns shifted
again to Norman Braman who implemented his own rebuilding program with
the Eagles.
The Eagles home, Lincoln Financial Field, began it’s building process of
May 2001. It was a $512 million endeavor, seats 68,532, and boasts
Daktronics HDTV screens, 2 at a size of 27’ x 96’ and another at 14’ x
25’. The stadium covers roughly 15 acres. The Technological enhancements
alone make Lincoln Financial Field one of the most state-of-the-art
stadiums in the country.
