The AFC West San Diego Chargers:

The San Diego Chargers started out as the Los Angeles Chargers on August 14th, 1959 when Barron Hilton was awarded an AFL franchise. They started off with a bang, winning the AFL Western Division Championship in 1960, but they had no fan support behind them so after much consideration Hilton relocated the team to San Diego. Their first priority upon arriving was to expand the Balboa Stadium so it would seat 34,000 fans. Under head coach Sid Gillmans direction the Chargers became a dominating force. They won 5 of the first 6 AFL seasons and took the AFL Championship in 1963. The Chargers stay in San Diego was solidified with the building of a nearly 69,000 seat stadium in 1967. The Chargers went into a 13 year slump not winning a title for 13 seasons. As hard as the Chargers tried, they couldn’t get back the fire they had in the early 1960’s. It wasn’t until 1979 that the team started to have winning records again, under coach Don Coryell. The Chargers were once again focused on their forward passing game with quarterback Dan Fouts. They won a few AFC Western titles and the final 2 AFC Championships. They had a playoff run in 1982 and then dropped into another slump for the following 10 years. In 1992 Bobby Ross took over as coach and led the Chargers triumphantly back to the playoffs and to the Super Bowl in 1995.

The San Diego Chargers home is Qualcomm Stadium. It has a natural grass field and 10 acres of landscaping and covers approximately 166 acres overall. In 1997 the stadium underwent a major expansion that cost roughly $78 million. Over 10,000 seats were added and 34 suites as well. Two state of the art video screens and a practice field for the Chargers were also added. Qualcomm stadium currently seats 71, 500.
