San Francisco 49ers:
The San Francisco 49ers were one of the most dominant charter teams in
the All American Football Conference during it’s four year existence.
From 1946 to 1949 the 49ers were second in the AAFC only to the
Cleveland Browns. The 49ers handed the Browns two of their four losses
in the AAFC, but still found themselves in second place every year. They
came to the NFL in 1950 after the folding of the AAFC, and even though
they had some of the biggest names in the league they couldn’t come up
with a title win for two decades. In the early years of the 1970’s they
started to taste success with three straight Western Division
Championship wins in 1970, 1971, and 1972. New life was breathed into
the 49ers when the franchise got a new owner in Edward J. DeBartolo Jr.
DeBartolo was determined to build the 49ers into a championship team and
one of his first major decisions was to bring in offensive specialist
Bill Walsh as the new head coach. Goals were met and dreams were
realized just three short years later when the 49ers finally won a
league Championship at Super Bowl XVI. With renewed confidence San
Francisco won the NFC West in 1983. In 1984 the team was nearly
unstoppable, they gave up only one loss out of 19 games and they brought
home the victory at Super Bowl XIX. Walsh retired after a third
championship win at Super Bowl XXIII and was replaced by George Seifert.
The 49ers had big name players that Seifert used to the teams full
advantage including Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott and quarterback Joe Montana,
many of whom are the Hall of Fame today.
In 1971 the 49ers moved from Kezar Stadium to the 68,491 seat
Candlestick Park, where they have remained ever since. Candlestick Park
was originally built for Major League Baseballs San Francisco Giants.
Construction began in August of 1958 and after numerous funding
problems, seating delays and a few other setback the stadium finally
opened on April 20th, 1961. In 1971 the stadium underwent a $16.1
million upgrade to make it accessible to football as well as baseball.
The natural grass surface was replaced by Astroturf and seating was
increased to 59,000. In 1979 the Astroturf surface replaced back to
natural grass. Today Candlestick Park has a seating capacity of 64,450
and the 49ers sell out every game.
