St. Louis Rams:
The St. Louis Rams originated in Cleveland in 1937, making them one of
the oldest teams in the NFL. The manpower shortages caused by World War
II affected all of the NFL. The Rams were forced to disband due to the
shortages but reconvened a year later. Dan Reeves, who purchased the
team in 1941 moved the franchise to Los Angeles in 1946. Reeves signed
the first two African-American players in the NFL since 1932, Kenny
Washington and Woody Strode. Reeves also hired a full time scouting
staff which had never been done before. The Rams first four seasons in
Los Angeles weren’t easy. The constant battle with the AAFC’s intra-city
team the Dons was financially draining the franchise. Just as the AAFC
disbanded in 1949 the Rams seemed to pull things together on the field.
They played their way to four NFL Western titles over a seven year
period and a second NFL Championship. Fan support for the Rams exploded
and on 22 occasions over 80,000 people packed the Coliseum in Los
Angeles. After the Rams took another NFL Western title in 1955 they hit
a championship slump that lasted nearly eleven years. George Allen came
in as the new head coach and created what was termed the “Fearsome
Foursome,” a line comprised of four men, two of them future hall of fame
inductees Deacon Jones and Merlin Olsen. The 1973 to 1977 seasons saw
the Rams win five straight NFL Western titles followed by a 1979 NFC
Championship win. The Rams owner Bob Irsay and the Baltimore Colts owner
Carroll Rosenbloom traded franchises in 1972 and in 1995 the team moved
to St. Louis.
Wanting a new football only facility and not getting answers in Anaheim
the Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995. November 12th, 1995 marked the day
the Rams played their first game at the Edward Jones Dome. The Dome is
comprised of 3 tier seating area including 6,300 club seats and 125
luxury suites for a total of 65,000 seats. The Dome has a glass and
brick exterior and four separate entrances, each with a grand atrium.
The Edward Jones Dome has an Astroturf surface that is set up in a way
that allows it to be able to be rolled up in less than an hour if
needed. The Edward Jones Dome was constructed at a price of $281
million.
